Upcycling of existing furniture with new possibilities for use

The existing classic tables with four-legged metal frames no longer offered the flexibility of use demanded in today’s modern spatial concepts – cue Björn Ischi, who set about future-proofing the collection as part of a pilot project.

Transforming old furniture models into updated versions that meet new requirements calls for creativity and unconventionality. The furniture for the Pop-Up Space at Bern University of Applied Sciences is based on an undogmatic approach that involves cutting up old tabletops to new sizes and adding side strips of solid wood. The designer also used wood scraps from the Girsberger joinery for connecting elements, castors and feet. Felt elements can be attached and used as privacy screens when needed, and sockets mounted for a power supply. As a result of this project, immobile desks were transformed into mobile versions that students can simply release and move around the room.

Flexible contemporary desks created from used furniture items. The models are mobile and can be mounted with a power supply, making them ideal for a project space intended for interactive use.
