Our planet’s resources are finite. We have to stop disposing of raw materials and products after a single use. In future we will need to treat all materials as loans, feeding them back into the system after use.
The pouf programme Incycle is already showing the way. Depending on the element, Incycle is made from 90 to 95 % materials recycled from various used products. The main post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials used for Incycle consist of:
Reconstituted aseptic upholstery foam from used mattresses and other foam products
Base panels from mixed plastic waste
Grey board structures from 100 % recycled paper
Upholstery batting and cover fabrics from recycled PET
Origin of materials: Belgium, Denmark, German, Austria, Poland
The yarn for the fabric is made from 100 % recycled polyester that incorporates plastic waste from the ocean. This plastic waste is collected and recycled by approved partners of the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE organisation. The result is SEAQUAL® YARN, which is made up of around 10 % Upcycled Marine Plastic (plastic waste from the sea) and 90 % post-consumer PET from land-based sources.
The single-colour versions of the Grain fabric contain 92 % recycled polyester, the two-colour versions 80 %. The environmental friendliness of the fabric is also documented by STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification.
The upholstery batting consists of 70 % polyester recyclate obtained from used PET bottles, which have been pressed and crushed into PET flakes. These are then transformed into granules that form the basis for producing staple fibres, which serve as the raw material for the batting.
Incycle’s upholstery foam comes from 91 % post-consumer polyurethane foams in the form of recycled mattresses and foams. Following a thorough cleaning process, the material is reprocessed into foam blocks with 9 % polyurethane binder being added.
The base panels of the Incycle upholstered bodies are polymer panels made from 100 % recycled waste polyolefin plastics (mainly PE and PP) by thermal bonding.
The upholstery substructure consists of grey board made from 100 % recycled paper.
Paper and cardboard are collected and separated, then pressed into bales, dissolved in water and shredded. The resulting pulp is then used to make new cardboard and paper products with the aid of rollers and dryer sections.
Inside Incycle is a structure of steel profiles that secure the backrest to the seat, with 40% of these semi-finished steel products being made using steel scrap.
