Apprenticeships as an upholstery and decorative stitcher

Apprenticeship at Girsberger
in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl, Germany

During this two-year apprenticeship you will learn cutting, sewing and decorative techniques for upholstery. You will sew upholstery coverings, often for small numbers of items or custom-made pieces. The choice of suitable materials is just as much part of a stitcher's daily craft as measuring and cutting leather, artificial leather or other textiles and fillings. In order to use as little material as possible, you will be using CAD pattern cutting software.

As part of the projects we undertake, our apprentices also help to create pattern templates. You will learn a wide variety of stitching techniques such as whipping, top stitching and hemming using our modern industrial sewing machines (e.g. overlocker, crimping and twin needle machines). You'll also learn how to glue in foam and wadding, iron covers and sew in piping, plastic shaping and zips, and will do this on a regular basis.

Duration of apprenticeship: 2 years

Upholstery is the right vocation for you if you:

are good with your hands, can work carefully and accurately, have a love of textiles and leather and good spatial awareness. You also need a flair for shapes and colours and a certain amount of technical understanding. The required entry qualification is a good general education school leaving certificate issued on completion of grade 10 (German "Mittlere Reife" or "Mittlerer Bildungsabschluss" from a Werkrealschule).

«The cutting and sewing tasks are very varied and challenging. I get to work in a young team and learn a lot from my friendly and competent colleagues. It's a very pleasant environment.»
